《Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less》

PART 1 ESSENCE What Is the Core Logic of an Essentialist?

Nonessentialist Essentialist
Choose I have to I choose to
Discern everything is important. only a few things are important.
Trade-off I can do both. I can do anything but not everything.

Chapter 4 TRADE-OFF Which Problem Do I Want?

  • TRADE-OFF: 取舍,有舍才有得。舍是“放弃”,通过放弃来减少精力(个人)、财力(公司)消耗以谋取更广阔的发展机会和上升空间。因此“舍”不仅痛苦(痛感不亚于辟邪剑法那一刀),舍弃后必然要面对外界压力,这一过程更加艰辛。我为保持自身独立性,选择放弃了国内一家保险公司可养老的职位,去“外面”混社会,最后一个月薪资是在那家公司的三倍(尽管不高但确是离职前的我想象不到的),工资上来之后,我才逐渐摆脱家庭困扰;

  • TRADE-OFF: 取舍。

  • TRADE-OFF: 取舍。取,在“舍”的时候就已经进行了,因此需耐心。“取”是一个过程,可能隐忍、苦修长达数年数十年之久。比如诸葛隐居山野却名声在外;比如“看护”明神宗长大的冯保;

PART 2 EXPLORE Discern the Vital Few from the Trivial Many

  • Essentialists

    • exploring
    • listening
    • debating
    • questioning
    • thinking

    • 思考的空间;
      • 有谁?
      • 什么样的空间?安静、远离“诱惑”,还需要什么?
    • 看和听的时间;
      • 什么时候?
      • 多久?
    • 玩得是否尽兴;
      • 多久?马斯克能和人玩一晚上
      • 什么类型的游戏?
    • 睡眠质量;
      • 多久?
      • 和时间有关系吗?
    • 是否有纪律、高标准地执行;
      • 标准如何设立?
      • 如何更好的设定“纪律”?

    • 思考时是否保持客观;
    • 是否“被动地”进行重复性思考但没有任何结果;
    • 是更清醒了还是变得更负面了。

Overthinking

Symptoms of Overthinking
  • Repetitive and Unproductive Thinking:
    Overthinking involves a cycle of thoughts that repeat themselves, often without leading to any resolution or action.
  • Excessive Analysis:
    It can involve overanalyzing situations, past events, or potential future outcomes, often to the point of magnifying minor issues.
  • Focus on Negativity:
    Overthinking often involves dwelling on negative thoughts, fears, and potential problems, rather than focusing on solutions or positive aspects.
  • Difficulty Disengaging:
    Overthinkers find it challenging to shift their focus away from the thoughts they are dwelling on, leading to a constant mental burden.
Potential Consequences:
  • Increased Anxiety and Stress:
    The constant worry and negative thoughts associated with overthinking can contribute to anxiety and stress.
  • Decision Paralysis:
    Overanalyzing situations can make it difficult to make decisions, leading to a sense of being stuck or overwhelmed.
  • Sleep Disturbances:
    The mental chatter and racing thoughts associated with overthinking can make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.
  • Emotional Distress:
    The negative emotions and self-criticism that can accompany overthinking can contribute to overall emotional distress and lower self-esteem.

Introspection(内省)

Key Aspects of Introspection:
  • Self-Reflection:
    Introspection involves thinking about your own experiences, beliefs, and behaviors.

  • Mental Observation:
    It’s a process of paying attention to your thoughts and feelings as they happen.

  • Understanding Inner Workings:
    Introspection aims to uncover the “why” behind - your actions and reactions.
    Distinguished from External Observation:
    While you can observe others’ behavior or physical appearance, introspection is about understanding your own internal world.

  • Balance and Perspective:
    While introspection can be valuable, it’s important to avoid excessive self-criticism and overthinking.
