《Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less》

#BN 【book2】 chapter2

Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life consists in the elimination of non-essentials. Lin YuTang. 《The importance of living》.

The Essentialist

The Way of the Essentialist

  • Not about how to get more things done; it’s about how to get the right things done;
  • living by design, not by default.

The Model

  • needs, not wants.
  • enjoy the journey, not the destination.

The Way of the Nonessentialist

If you don’t prioritize your life, someone else will.

Why Nonessentialism Is Everywhere

  • TOO MANY CHOICES
  • Too Much Social Pressure
  • THE IDEA THAT “YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL”

Solutions

  • explore and evaluate
    • “Do I love this?” and “Do I look great in it?” and “Do I wear this often?”。单从这几个例子来看,评估的标准是:强烈的感受(system 1)和事实,唯独没用理性(system 2);

    • Part One of this book will help you figure out what those activities are.

  • eliminate
    • Part Two of this book will show you how to eliminate the nonessentials
    • how do it in a way that garners you respect from colleagues, bosses, clients, and peers.
  • execute
    • a system to make executing your intentions as effortless as possible.

Essence: the core mind-set

    1. Individual choice: We can choose how to spend our energy and time.
    1. The prevalence of noise: Almost everything is noise, and a very few things are exceptionally valuable.
    1. The reality of trade-offs: We can’t have it all or do it all.

Steps

    1. EXPLORE:
      DISCERNING THE TRIVIAL MANY FROM THE VITAL FEW
    • Essentialists systematically explore and evaluate a broad set of options before committing to any.
    • three questions:
      • “What do I feel deeply inspired by?”
      • “What am I particularly talented at?”
      • “What meets a significant need in the world?”
    1. ELIMINATE: CUTTING OUT THE TRIVIAL MANY
    • It means pushing against social expectations. To do it well takes courage and compassion(同情?why?).
    1. EXECUTE: REMOVING OBSTACLES AND MAKING EXECUTION EFFORTLESS

An Idea Whose Time Has Come

GUARANTEE EXECUTION

“YES” IS NOTHING WITHOUT “HOW”

  • 用问题回答问题要注意“语气”;
  • 注意话题流动;

INFLUENCING THOSE BEHIND THE TABLE

  • 对面and我方都不是“孤立的”一个人;

SPOTTING LIARS, DEALING WITH JERKS, AND CHARMING EVERYONE ELSE

  • 对付“老手”,拼耐力;

THE 7-38-55 PERCENT RULE

  • body language and tone of voice—not words—are our most powerful assessment tools.

THE RULE OF THREE

  • The Rule of Three is simply getting the other guy to agree to the same thing three times in the same conversation.
  • 目的是确定对方是否在撒谎、是否会执行;

THE PINOCCHIO EFFECT
